For anyone eyeing a compact electric SUV but stuck with street parking, a shared garage spot, or a rented apartment, the math has changed. According to Driving ECO's latest buyer's guide for the Spanish market, the usual fixation on WLTP range takes a back seat to a more honest yardstick: how quickly and how steadily a car fills from 10% to 80% on a public DC fast charger. The outlet argues that's where apartment-bound buyers actually win or lose their week.
Range is a number; the charging curve is the experience
A 500 km WLTP rating paired with a 100 kW DC peak looks tidy on a brochure, Driving ECO notes. In practice, it means a 40-50 minute top-up every week at an Ionity or Zunder stall — the kind of wait that quietly wears down patience. A car delivering roughly 400 km in real driving, with 150 kW DC or better, turns the same session into a 20-minute coffee stop on the way to the supermarket. Peak kilowatts matter less than the curve's shape: models sustaining 130-150 kW up to 60-70% state of charge keep the stop tight. Others taper sharply, and the schedule bleeds. Hyundai, Kia, and Tesla have done their homework here, the guide says; several competitors still haven't caught up.
Three models worth a test drive
The Kia EV3 earns the guide's most well-rounded nod under €40,000. Standard heat pump, well-implemented DC charging, up to 605 km WLTP in Long Range trim, and about 450 km in real-world driving. Its charging curve ranks among the steadiest in the segment.
The Hyundai Kona Electric holds its reputation as the class efficiency benchmark. Peak DC tops out at 102 kW, lower than the EV3, but the curve stays flat and consumption stays low — fewer stops per week for urban drivers. For frequent long-haul trips, the outlet concedes, it falls short against the EV3.
The Volvo EX30 completes the shortlist as the compact, city-friendly option. The Single Motor Extended Range variant reaches a 153 kW DC peak, heat pump included on higher trims. Minimalist cabin, tight footprint.
The network side of the equation
The recommendation comes with a network reality check. Ionity owns the highway corridor with real-world outputs between 150 and 350 kW. Zunder has expanded north and offers flat monthly pricing. Iberdrola covers ground well but with inconsistent power delivery. Repsol fits the meal-stop case at 50 and 150 kW stalls. Tesla Superchargers, now open to other brands, remain the most reliable for trouble-free sessions. The practical floor for an apartment-bound buyer, per Driving ECO: CCS support at a minimum of 150 kW DC, Tesla-compatibility through the app a bonus.
