GM Expands Battery Strategy Beyond EVs into Grid-Scale Energy Storage

As InsideEVs reports from a San Francisco event this week, GM is moving beyond passenger cars into grid-scale energy — adding sodium-ion batteries to its lineup, launching a single-app charging tool called Energy Pass, and targeting 52,000 grid-connected EVs by the end of the decade.

Four chemistries, one grid bet

GM's battery portfolio now stretches across four technologies, per InsideEVs. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) covers affordable models like the Chevy Bolt and near-term storage projects. Traditional high-nickel (NMC) cells power most current vehicles. Lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) is in development to cut costs on big electric trucks and SUVs. Sodium-ion — co-developed with U.S. startup Peak Energy — is the newest branch, aimed at stationary energy storage rather than cars.

Vice president of battery and sustainability Kurt Kelty, a Tesla veteran, told InsideEVs that sodium-ion prismatic cells need no active cooling, handle extreme temperatures, and will cost 20% less over their lifespan than today's LFP standard. With U.S. EV sales cooling after federal tax credits expired, GM is steering battery capacity toward storage for power-hungry AI data centers — a market with enormous demand and a clear race to the lowest cost per kilowatt-hour.

Kelty framed the supply-chain angle too: sodium reserves are roughly 1,000 times more abundant than lithium, and "ultimately, this should be a North American battery," he told InsideEVs. GM has committed $900 million to battery research.

Energy Pass and bidirectional charging

For owners, the more immediate news is Energy Pass — a single GM app that consolidates charging sessions and payments across major networks. It's the kind of tool I've been waiting for since my first public-charging session in a rented Bolt: fewer apps, fewer logins, one bill.

Under the hood, GM wants its quarter-million-plus U.S. EVs to act as rolling power banks. Vehicle-to-home bidirectional charging already works through specialized hardware the company installs at an owner's house for an added cost. A coming firmware update will let those cars send power back to the grid as well. InsideEVs notes that, in theory, every connected GM EV on the road could power 120,000 homes for up to a week.

Money on the table for shoppers

The bigger immediate number: California just rolled out $3,500 in EV rebates, according to The Mercury News. Eligibility rules and the application process are spelled out in that report. For households doing the math on out-the-door price, that's a real dent in monthly payments — and a useful offset now that federal tax credit hurdles are back in the picture for many buyers.

Separately, EIN News reports the EU has allocated nearly €44 million to EV purchase incentives, though specific national programs and timelines aren't detailed in the announcement.

And on the research side, the Department of Energy's Transportation Technologies Office continues to fund work with national labs and industry on cheaper batteries, faster charging, and workforce training — the slow pipeline that eventually shows up at the dealership.
