GM Recalls Nearly 1,000 Silverado and Sierra EVs Over Wheel and Battery Safety Risks

The larger action pulls 952 units — 513 Chevrolet Silverado EVs and 439 GMC Sierra EVs — over steel wheels with a manufacturing defect at the disc vent holes that can crack and separate under load. A second recall covers 10 vehicles across the Silverado EV, Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and Escalade IQL for a high-voltage battery defect with fire risk. Both actions are relevant for current owners and buyers awaiting steel-wheel configurations.

Wheel Defect and Inspection Scope

The affected hardware: RT3 steel road wheels and SG8 spare steel wheels produced between October 24, 2025 and March 13, 2026. Failure initiates at the disc vent holes. Cracking develops progressively and is rarely visible at the outset. A cracked disc can separate from the wheel under load, producing sudden loss of vehicle control.

Silverado EV trucks require inspection of all four wheels plus the spare. Sierra EV trucks require inspection of the spare steel wheel only. Sierra EV scope is narrower because the failure mode only activates when a defective spare is mounted after a flat or roadside event. Dealers inspect and replace as needed, free of charge.

GM reports zero incidents tied to the defect across both campaigns. Containment measures and validation improvements entered production in April 2026, isolating later vehicles from the issue.

Battery Recall and Resolution Path

The second campaign, NHTSA 26V494, covers 10 vehicles. The high-voltage battery may contain a loose internal module component. Component movement can damage the battery and elevate fire risk. No do-not-drive or park-outside advisory applies. Dealers replace the pack.

VIN lookup on NHTSA.gov went live July 30, 2026. Owner notification letters mail by September 14, 2026. Wheel replacement parts are phased — unsold trucks failing inspection are held until replacements arrive, which may delay steel-wheel Silverado EV deliveries.
