Google Maps Adds Precision Filters for EV Charging Stations
According to Mashable, Google Maps has pushed two EV-specific filters live across Android and iOS simultaneously — a "fast charging" station toggle and a plug-type compatibility filter — with no staged release window.

Two filters, immediate rollout
The update lands against a network the platform now has to sort: roughly 96,000 public charging locations and over 294,000 ports across the U.S. and Canada, per the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center's mid-August 2026 tally.
What the filters actually do
Two distinct toggles. The speed filter surfaces stations tagged for fast charging — the wording matters, because Google has not publicly specified a kW threshold for the tag, so the result set will follow whatever metadata the charge point operators self-report in their listings. The plug-compatibility filter narrows results to connectors matching the vehicle profile set inside Google Maps.
The plug filter is the more concrete change of the two. It directly addresses the failure case Mashable describes — arriving at a station to find the physical connector doesn't match the vehicle — by removing those stations from the result set in advance. Across sites that carry multiple connector standards on shared hardware, though, the filter only resolves the mechanical mismatch; vehicle-to-charger handshake faults and stall-level activation reliability remain separate problems the toggle does not touch.
Where this sits against current DC fast capacity
DC fast charge is the segment both filters are really surfacing. The U.S. and Canada now run around 18,000 DC fast locations and nearly 84,000 fast-charging ports per the DOE count. Growth over the past year has come from incumbents — Tesla, EVgo, ChargePoint, Electrify America, Red E Charge — plus two newer entrants worth tracking. Ionna, the eight-automaker joint venture that opened its first site in spring 2025, is already at 147 locations and 1,332 ports, with a 30,000-port commitment by 2030. Walmart's own network, after launching in-house builds in 2025, has reached 79 locations and 664 ports.
That footprint still doesn't resolve the discovery problem on its own. EV drivers need the nearest compatible stall that will actually deliver its rated kW on a given session, not just the nearest labeled result. Google is now the default front end for that query on Android and iOS. Coverage, uptime, and payment reliability are already the dimensions flagged as gaps in the public charging experience, and they'll be the same dimensions these new filters get judged against.
