How Texas Electric Vehicle Owners Can Help Stabilize the State Power Grid

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) projects peak demand could hit nearly 368,000 megawatts by 2032, more than four times the roughly 86,000 MW peak set in 2023.

Numbers that move fast

The Texas Department of Transportation counts roughly 1,500 new EVs joining state roads each week. Over 500,000 are already registered, and that figure is on track to top one million within 18 months, according to Mario Bravo, executive director of the Texas EV Education Project. The U.S. Department of Energy ranks Austin among the top three U.S. cities for EV ownership.

New-car demand is keeping pace. Ramanan Krishnamoorti, vice president for energy and innovation at the University of Houston, told KABB that roughly 10 to 15 percent of all new car sales in Texas are now electric. The state has more than 4,300 public charging stations online, with hundreds more under construction. The federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Plan, passed under the Biden administration, sent more than $400 million to Texas to expand that network, Bravo said.

The peak-hour squeeze

Here is the part that hits the monthly bill. A Level 2 home charger draws about 7.2 kilowatts — roughly the same as an electric dryer. DC fast chargers pull significantly more. Most of that load shows up at the worst possible moment: right around 6 p.m., when drivers walk in the door and plug in, which is already one of the highest-demand windows for the Texas grid.

The fix, experts told KABB, is shifting charging to overnight hours, signing up for utility smart-charging programs, or going one step further with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. V2G lets a parked EV feed stored energy back to the grid during peak demand, easing strain on the system and lowering the infrastructure costs that get spread across every ratepayer's bill. Austin Energy is already running V2G programs.

What to do before you buy — or tonight

For shoppers, the practical checklist now includes a second question: can your next EV push power back to the grid, and is your utility paying for it? Not every model supports bidirectional charging, and not every provider compensates for it. Before signing the out-the-door paperwork, ask the dealer which trims are V2G-ready and check your utility's program terms.

If V2G is not on the table yet, most smart-charging setups cost nothing beyond a few minutes in your charger's app or your utility's portal. Overnight rates are typically the cheapest tier on the plan, and the savings show up on the next bill. That is the kind of low-effort win that makes the daily EV math work, even as the grid around it gets a little more crowded.
