Supply, retirement, and the recovery yield gap

The India analysis frames recycling capacity as the gating factor, not fleet uptake. BizzBuzz reports the same dynamic is already playing out in China, which is entering its first major EV battery retirement wave. The technical bottleneck is recovery yield. Without standardized cell formats, accessible state-of-health data, and consistent chemistry streams, black-mass output stays below the throughput needed to feed new cell production at scale. Hydrometallurgical processing can extract lithium, nickel, and cobalt at competitive purity, but only if feedstock meets assay specifications. Mixed-format packs and proprietary cell-to-pack architectures break that assumption and push recovered-material cost back toward mined material.

Standards, prizes, and the serviceability layer

Fleet World flags EV battery testing, repair, and recycling as the headline agenda at the next VRA meeting. The technical implication: workshop-level protocols are being formalized alongside OEM service channels. Independent state-of-health diagnostics, currently locked behind OEM telematics and NDA-protected scan tools, will start migrating toward third-party inspection standards. That shift is the prerequisite for any functioning second-life or reuse market; without transparent SoH data, residual value pricing is guesswork.

Award purse aside, the target is the same yield problem: higher recovery rates per kilogram of processed pack, at energy and chemical inputs competitive with primary extraction.
