Solid-State Battery Breakthrough: How Factorial and SK On Could Redefine EV Range

The relevant benchmarks are already on record: Stellantis testing put the cells at 375 Wh/kg over more than 600 cycles, with a 15–90% charge window in 18 minutes and a 4C discharge rate across -30°C to 45°C. The pairing matters because SK On operates over 200 GWh of annual capacity, roughly half of it in the US, which is the actual constraint on any solid-state rollout.
The Cell Spec Sheet
375 Wh/kg is the headline figure. Mainstream NMC packs land at 250–280 Wh/kg; LFP sits below 200 Wh/kg. That delta is the entire reason solid-state gets attention: it translates directly into more range from a smaller, lighter pack, or equivalent range from less mass. Layer in the 18-minute 15→90% window and 4C discharge capability, and the cell outperforms production lithium-ion on energy density, peak charge rate, and sustained output. The thermal envelope (-30°C to 45°C) is what Mercedes validated last fall when a modified EQS prototype covered 745 miles (1,200 km) on a single pack, a number that doesn't survive the marketing-to-reality filter at typical highway speeds but still sets a new ceiling for cell-level efficiency.
Why Scale Is the Real Story
Cell chemistry is no longer the bottleneck. Manufacturing yield is. SK On brings 200+ GWh of installed annual capacity and an existing OEM customer base spanning Hyundai, Ford, and Volkswagen. The MOU's focus is line adaptation, not greenfield fabs. If existing battery plants can be retooled for Factorial's solid-electrolyte format, unit cost curves bend in the right direction. If they can't, the timeline stretches past 2030 regardless of cell performance. Factorial also locked in a materials partnership with South Korea's POSCO FUTURE M last December, which addresses the upstream supply side of the same equation.
What This Means for Buyers Today
Zero production vehicles ship with these cells. Factorial's commercial partners, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, and Stellantis, are all in the testing phase with no confirmed launch dates. Mercedes CTO Markus Schäfer has called the tech a potential "gamechanger," but that's a directional statement, not a shipment schedule. For shoppers evaluating EVs right now, ignore the hype and stick to instrumented metrics: real-world range at steady-state highway speed, peak charge rate held to 80%, and thermal throttling behavior in ambient heat. Solid-state belongs on the watch list, not the spec sheet.
