The raw count measures deployment pace, not delivered throughput, and the more useful framing for buyers is what the network actually looks like to a non-Tesla vehicle on the same connector standard.
Site count is not capacity
Locations are not stalls, and stalls are not megawatts. EVChargingStations.com tracks site count; it does not break out stall density, peak charge rate, or utilization in the same release. For someone planning a long-distance route, that distinction is the whole game: a six-stall urban site and a twenty-stall travel hub behave very differently under load. The 241 number is a deployment proxy, useful for tracking geography, weak for capacity planning. Tesla's historical advantage wasn't raw location count — it was density, uptime, and predictable billing solved in one stack, and the quarterly rollups still don't surface the uptime metric that actually drove owner loyalty.
CCS2 unlocks Volvo's full lineup
Per AutoNext.co, Volvo's entire European electric range — EX30, EX40, EC40, EX60, EX90, and ES90 — gains access to more than 20,000 Superchargers across 29 European countries starting Q4 2026. Activation runs through the Volvo Cars app: locate, authenticate, pay, no Tesla account required. The hardware delta is zero. European cars already ship with CCS2, so this is a software and billing integration, not a retrofit. The connector mismatch is why Japan and South Korea wait until 2029 — Tesla's hardware there is NACS, and Volvo plans to move selected models to NACS first. The bulk of the rollout covers Germany, France, Norway, the UK, Sweden, Italy, and Spain, with Belgium among the remaining countries — the same major routes European road-trippers already use.
Verdict for the buyer
Pilot Travel Centers has crossed 300 fast-charging locations in the U.S., per Electric Cars Report, distributed along highway corridors rather than concentrated in metro density. Two networks, two strategies. For a buyer weighing home Level 2 against public Level 3, the inputs that decide real wait time are route frequency, the connector standard on the specific vehicle, and whether peak charge rate holds under thermal load during peak hours. 241 sites is a deployment metric, not a capacity metric. The structural shift is access: with Volvo's CCS2-equipped lineup joining through a software unlock and no adapter, the Supercharger network is functionally a shared asset rather than a Tesla-only moat. Watch the next quarterly report for per-site stall count and the share of higher-power hardware. Those numbers will tell you whether the build pace is actually adding throughput or just redrawing the map.
